7/09/2008   Madison Magazine - Fathers Day Exclusive

MOLLIE: “It’s fair to say Dad inspired us early on with his musical collection. As we were growing up, he always had classics from country greats Charley Pride, Dolly Parton and Don Williams blasting out of the stereo, so it’s no surprise that we took that interest on ourselves. Brooke always loved singing and Sam and I loved tagging along, so Mum would take us around the country, entering us in all the talent quests while poor Dad stayed behind to work and fund our weekends away.

“Because we were away so often, our weekends at home [in Grafton, NSW] were our special time with Dad. On Sunday mornings he had to check in on his butcher shop, so he’d get us all up at 6.30am and take us along, visiting the lolly shop on the way back. After lengthy periods away from Dad, we always looked forward to the lolly shop as our special time together – you don’t get up at 6.30am for just anybody!”

BROOKE: “What I remember most as a child was how hard Dad worked to keep us interested in music. He was always gone by the time we woke up, worked 12-hour days and still found the time to take us out for rides and to sporting events. To this day, I don’t know how he had the energy. He also used to get quite down about missing our shows so he would make us put on mini-concerts for him on the nights we were all home.”

SAM: “Dad’s the kind of guy who’s always been the life of the party. You can always hear him across the room, telling a joke or having a laugh, and he hasn’t changed a bit over the years. It must have been hard with us being away so much, but I’ve never seen a prouder father. Down by his shed he’s got a stereo and our CD is on constant rotation. Brooke, Mollie and I just laugh and think, yep, the neighbours must really hate us by now!”

PETER: “When the girls won the Golden Guitar award in 2007 [another followed in 2008], I almost cried with pride. People had been coming up to me, saying, ‘Your kids are stars,’ but they’re still your babies – you can’t see them any other way. It’s only lately that I can sit back and say, crikey, look at the girls!

“It was hard having the kids away so much, but it provided good training for life without them now. They’re constantly on tour and absolutely shocking at calling me. My wife and I joke that if we ever want to know what’s going on in their lives, we just have to open up a local gig guide. I put my butcher shop on the market the very week after they got signed. I worked hard so my kids could have everything, but after 23 years and only 10 weeks holiday in that entire time, I felt I had done my job as a father. I recently started my own lawn-mowing business, working the hours that I want and it’s heaven.

“The only change I would make to my relationship with my daughters is the one I’ve already made, and that is getting to know them better as adults.” ?
